Observing elephants seals at the seashore

In addition to the North Drake’s Beach overlook at Point Reyes we can often observe The Northern California Elephant Seal right at Drake’s Beach!

What we will do:

Observe elephant seals at Drake’s Beach and /or the elephant seal overlook at North Drake's Beach.  Discuss behavior and physical adaptations that make it possible for these animals to live in the deep ocean.

Engage in discussions about the natural history of these amazing marine mammals.

This program could serve as an introduction to the natural history of elephant seals or it could serve as a culminating field trip to celebrate what has been studied in the classroom.

Where:

Drake’s Beach at the Ken Patrick Visitor Center or Chimney Rock Overlook

When:

End of December through mid March for the main season, and throughout the year for seasonal molting of different groups of animals.
